The Whippet Club Championship Show 3rd April 2010 -  Judge’s Report – Dogs

I was honoured to be offered this appointment and thank the officers and committee for their hospitality and the exhibitors for the sporting way in which they accepted my decisions.  Judging whippet dogs is quite a difficult task with a variety of type and a considerable variation in quality.  As I spend very little time at the dog ring when exhibiting, many of the dogs were unknown to me which made my day all the more interesting.   One of the major problems currently in the breed is the shortness, and subsequent lack of return, of upper arm.   This obviously throws the whole front construction forward and, whilst at first glance the movement may seem OK, the  gait becomes either shortened and too‘busy’, or the forelegs, whilst not ‘hackneying’,  are lifted too high from the ground, goose-step fashion.  This is not what is asked for in the breed standard – ‘forelegs should be thrown forward and low over the ground’.   At the other end of the dog, we do not want excessive angulation, ie too long from the stifle joint to the hock.  Bearing these points in mind, I was in general looking for a balanced hound to fit the standard and was pleased with my winners – many of the placed dogs could change places on another day.   My DCC/RBIS was Ch Huntinghill The Jazz Man and I am sure that his handler, Ann Snellgrove, did not mind one bit giving way to the bitch for BIS – Ch Huntinghill Jazzalicious – which, of course she co-owns with daughter Rachel. My co judge, Liz Third, and I were in complete agreement on these two awards, but with two such different puppies to choose from we decided to bring in the referee.  BPIS was the bitch, Reynier-Yates’ Diaghilev Prima Ballerina.  Best Veteran, Pirie’s Ch Shoe Buckle.

Sp.Vet Dog 7-9 yrs(10-1)  1. Minns’ Multi Ch Airescot Ruby Rascal.  Well known dog, deserving of his titles.  Only one week away from his 10th birthday, he seems to get better and better.   It has all been said about him before.  So sound and totally balanced with free flowing profile movement.  Unfortuneately had to leave before the challenge for BVD.   2nd King’s Daleko Monark of the Glen JW.  Had no idea which dog this was with his replacement handler, who did a super job!  Just 7 yrs, another one wearing very well. Good head, strong but  elegant neck into good shoulders and pleasing topline.  Well balanced and in lovely muscle tone.  Sound flowing movement.   Close decision.  3. Gilkes’ Spinneyhill Minstrel.

Sp Vet dog 10+ yrs(6)  1. Pirie’s Ch Shoe Buckle.  10 yrs red fawn.   Good muscle tone.  Clean shoulders and correct topline. Deep brisket and good strong thighs.   Moved very well.  Easy winner of this class and although he was not challenged for BVD, this award was justified when he was awarded BVIS with the agreement of my co-judge.   2.  Hall’s Faracre Fanfare to Arlane 10 yrs.  Quality fawn with lovely shoulders and good clean line throughout.  Nice topline, good condition and moved well.   Nice dog.  3.  Traylor’s Khabaray Mattesse.

MP Dog(11-2)  1. Veredon VIP. Quality fawn of almost 9 mths.  Balanced pup with good head and good lay-back of shoulder.  Nice topline  and well bodied for age. Good thighs.  Moved well.   A very sound, promising puppy.  2.  Ellis’s Railfield Rainhawk. Another quality fawn with lovely length and elegance, good shoulders, thighs and second thighs.   Everything just as it should be at 7 mths.  Should have a bright future. Just lost out to winner on a couple of months maturity.   3.  Home & Fisher-Home’s Bescott Lessons Dreamer of Jasarat.

PD (5-1)  A very difficult class to make sense of .  1. Cowton’s Lawleymoon Ticket to Ride.  Strong, brindle dog well up to size but at almost 1 yr he looks as though he has done all his growing!  Well constructed with good neck, deep brisket and strong loin. Well conditioned without being over muscled.  Moved very well, certainly more in control of his movement than his classmates, earning him this placing and BPD.  2.  Smeath’s Willingwisp Moonwalker. Quality dog of 10 months.  Nice type with particularly good hindquarters and well let down hocks.  Carrying plenty of ‘puppy fat’ and a little unsettled but one to watch for the future.   3rd. Robertson’s Sheol Tastes Like More.

JD (9-2) 1. Poole’s Demerlay Regal Renown at Brockfield. Brindle/white. One I have admired from the ringside and he did not disappoint me today. Well balanced with elegant yet masculine head.  Super neck into well layed back shoulders.   Deep brisket. Correct topline and good hindquarters with strong thigh & second thigh.  Moved effortlessly round the ring with the low forward reach I was looking for.  Seriously considered for top honours but feels he just needs a little more time to fully mature.  2. Waddell & Morris’s Crosscop Reason To Believe. Well made young dog, balanced with good shoulder and hind quarters.   Lovely length.  Close decision.  Would have liked to see him carrying a fraction more weight.  Moved well.  3. Tunrbull’s Tunrstone Crackaway Jack.   Another nice one with true whippet type and good movement.

YlgD (18-1)  Difficult class. Many which took my eye in the line were disappointing on the move.   1. Smith’s Courthill Chorister at Steveila.  Dark Br/white trim.  Elegant, well balance dog with good head, neck and topline, also showing good hind power.  Excelled in profile movement with good low forward reach.  2. Stock & Gilmour’s Ch Courthill Coeur de Lyon.  Similar comments to the winner.  Caught my eye when standing but just preferred the easier, longer reaching front movement of winner.  3. Cousins & Tipping’s Kordaline Jesse James.

MD (5)  1. Home & Fisher-Home’s Bescott Lessons Dreamer of Jasarat.  3rd in MPD. Pleasing head & neck. Good shoulder and nice topline for age.  Well developed thighs with well let down hocks.  Very sound with flowing profile movement.   Good Bone.  Still a real baby showing promise.  2.  Wilson’s Meandi Sunny Boy. Br/W. Unsettled and seemed to be looking for someone in the distance making movement difficult to assess, but from what I did see he is sound.   Attractive dog with  good shoulder placement and pleasing topline.  Still very much a baby.  3. de Lacey Munday’s Whipowil Sea Lord.

ND (3-1) 1. Van Raalte’s Dashing Romeo at Suchini. Fawn Br/white trim. Nice size. Masculine head, good shoulders, topline and hindquarters. Sound mover in hard muscular condition, but could carry a little less condition to show more elegance.  2. Downes’ Uphavon Aviator.   Br/white trim .A smart, balanced dog with good head, neck and topline. Well developed quarters.  Moved well.

UgD(8-4)  1. Dashing Romeo at Suchini.  2. Johnston’s Collooney Tricky Dicky.  Attractive Br/w trim. Good shoulders, pleasing topline and well developed thighs – all put to good use in his very sound movement. Balanced and elegant.  Would benefit from carrying a little more condition.  3.  Price’s Whisterfield Jack Be Nimble.

PgD(17-1) 1. Harding’s Copsebury Quantum Leap.   Super quality fawn. Clean shoulders with good layback and return of upper arm.  Liked his topline and well developed hindquarters with good second thigh.  A really balanced dog, no exagerations  and so correct and sound in movement.  2. Poole’s Demerlay Standndeliver at Brockfield.  Fawn/dark mask.   Very sound, well made dog.  Similar remarks to winner, whose extra bit of elegance tipped the balance.   3.  Hempstock & Hinchliffe’s Klondyke Reach For the Stars at Broughland.

MLD(16-1)   1. Cowton’s Harri Hester of Aamurisko.  Fawn Br./W trim.  Well balanced, quality dog and so very sound.   Masculine but elegant head, good neck, clean shoulders and correct topline.  Well muscled hindquarters with good thighs.  In tip top condition, did not put a foot wrong.   Seriously considered for top honours.     2.  Birrell’s Tazi Guardsman.   Fawn/white.   Well balanced with very clean, smooth lines.   Lovely to go over.  Good muscling.  Sound mover.   A very nice dog.  3.  Hall’s Faracre Figaro.

LD(14-1)  1. Sykes’ Falconcrag Valente at Veredon. Pale fawn in super coat and condition. Masculine head and neck. Well angulated shoulders balanced with strong, well developed hindquarters with low hocks. Good topline and underline.  Movement sound and displaying elegance with power.  On discovering the identity of this dog at the end of the show I realise that in the past I have thought he had a tendency to lean into his front and so looked ‘front heavy’.   Today he was at one with his handler and was totally balanced.  Strong contender for top honours.    2.  Holland’s Elmanash Elixir.   F/BR.  Well made, very sound and correct mover.  Pleasing head, good shoulders, topline and quarters.  Nice size.  All these points earned him his place here but felt that carrying a little less condition would give him a touch more elegance.   3.  Wilkinson’s Benzfreya Drumbeat.

OD(14-1) 1. Snelgroves’ Ch Huntinghill The Jazz Man.  FawnBr/white.  A worthy champion but one which had not particularly ‘excited’ me from the ringside.  On closer inspection I changed my mind.  A handsome, elegant dog whose long neck flows into clean well angulated shoulders and over a good topline. Lovely condition.  Movement sound in all directions with smooth, flowing profile stride.  CC and RBIS.   2.  Ellis’ Spinneyhill Rainmaker of Railfield.  R/Br. Quality dog, beautifully presented and handled.   Well made throughout and particularly liked his hindquarters. Moved very well.  A young dog who has been knocking at the door for top honours for some time and is now coming to full maturity.  Very close decision, unlucky to meet the winner on such good form.  RCC.
3. Russell’s Willingwist Star Trooper.   Lovely dog.  When they all entered the ring I thought he may be my winner, but I was disappointed to find him carrying too much weight today!

Margaret Dixon.
