Mr M Howgate's DOG CRITIQUE
Championship show: It was indeed an honour to be asked to judge
dogs for this well run & friendly clubs first championship show. It was also an
honour to be the co judge with Mary Lowe. The exhibitors were well catered for
with an excellent venue, with such an array of additional prizes. I had 134
entries & thank the exhibitors for your entries in these challenging times &
those who travelled some distance. I was looking for a hound that met my
interpretation of the standard with flowing lines. Stood four square, covering
the ground without appearing overstretched & with the indications that it had
the strength, muscle mass & definition to meet its functional expectations.
Toplines continue to be varied with the standard requiring a definite arch over
the loin & underlines being lost. Weak & narrow under jaws remain in my mind &
some exhibits were too heavily made, lacked muscle condition & there were some
that were too big. Not all doom & gloom because all my placed exhibits & many
others who were cardless were of a very good standard or better.
VD (12,4a) 1 Hamar's Janelyn Goldtec Paco. Brindle dog not showing his age. Elegant, masculine outline, good front & rear angulation. Solid & muscular, covered the ground when standing. A pleasing & accurate mover. Enjoyed his day out. BVD. In the challenge for best veteran he strode out accurately & well for BVIS. 2 Hall's Faracre Fanfare To Arlane. Pale fawn near 11 yeas old. Has excellent head, neck, flowing into well placed shoulders. Front angulation is good & he covers the ground when standing. 3 Barmoll Beekeer T Whipowil.
MPD (8,1a) 1 Head's Demerlay Hats Off To Larry. Always a taxing class with a small age difference & so many different stages of maturity. On the day this pale fawn & white trim proved the winner. Inevitably they will change places with maturity. He was the most mature by far & one of the least co operative. He had a very pleasing outline with correct proportions. Covered the ground without being tall. Good front angulation. shoulder placement & rear angulation. Neck flowed cleanly in a well covered body. A little headstrong when moving but showed more that enough to have a bright future. Best Puppy dog. 2 Hurley's Diaghilev Ballet Master. Another fawn & white trim of good quality was close up to the winner & similar construction remarks apply. Very pleasing complimentary front & rear angulation & moved well. Just not the maturity of the winner. 3 Faracre Filanderer.
PD (10,3a) 1 Robertson's Sheol Under The Influence. Another taxing class with variable stages of maturity. This pale fawn & white trim proved to be the winner. Whilst immature & a little apprehensive he had a very pleasing outline with correct proportions. Good front & rear angulation. Shoulder placement. Covered the ground without being too tall. Apprehensive moving very good behind & needs to tighten up in front but showed enough to have a bright future. 2 Newton's Nevedith Noble Ash. A dark brindle of heavier mould than the winner. He had good shoulder placement, front & rear angulation. Body covering hid his outline- maturity would see this improve. Not in tune with the handler when moving. A change of handler initally did not help but by the end of the class he began to settle & show his qualities. 3 Astri's Michael Schumacher.
JD (11,2a) 1 Morris & Waddell's Crosscop Reason To Believe. A pleasing sized Brindle with white trim headed what was a class of quality. He has all the escentials with no exagerations. Elegant neck with sweeping profile, good topline, front & rear angulation, Covers the ground standing but sometimes can be seen standing little short. A very well balanced dog length / height / substance. Owner needs to move on with more pace to show off his accurate movement. Still young but pleased me sufficiently to get the RCC. 2 Oliver's Spyanfly Set In Stone. Another pleasing brindle & white trim, close to winner with similarly construction, side profile & movement. The winner is more defined in topline at present. Both are young & this surely will improve with age. 3 Demerlay Red River.
YD (10,2) 1 Boughton's Bescott Slim Jim With Ipanema JW. Fawn dog with a very pleasing size, front angulation outline & proportions. Stands over the ground well without having to be stretched. I would have prefered him with a little less weight. Moved well. 2 Smith's Courthill Chorister At Steveila. Brindle & white trim with good front, rear angulation & shoulder placement Just the right body covering & is fit with good muscle tone. Needs to settle to show to show less fall away over the croup. Moved well with purpose. 3 Daleko Democrat.
ND (12,4a) 1 Aldridge-Blake's Astrophel Chestnut Tiger. Brindle & white trim dog of pleasing size & outline. Good front & rear angulation. I would have preferred slightly more length of loin & topline. At an in between stage at present & looks immature but has time to improve. Moved well. 2 Hamar's Astr's Michael Schumacher. A brindle dog of pleasing size & outline. Good front & rear angulation. Same remarks apply as winner being at an in between stage. 3 Whisterfield Jack Be Nimble. SP BEG D 1 Walker's Turnstone Tracker. Brindle & white trim dog of pleasing size & outline with balanced proportions. Good front & rear angulation. Would have preferred a more positive movement. 2 Price's Whisterfield Jack Be Nimble. Fawn with good front assembly in fit hard condition. Tends to drop his topline & does not fully stand over the ground. Moved well. One size smaller would help. 3 Erinnis Twilight Star.
GD (9,3a) 1 Head's Demerlay Red River. Fawn & white trim another out of the same mould from this kennel. A little heavier than some with good head, neck & front angulation, well covered right through. Good bone & feet. I feel he just holds his rear under himself. 2 Harding's Copsebury Quantum Leap. Fawn who stands four square & is in cleaming condition. Pleasing outline I would have prefered more bend of stifle to complete the picture. 3 Lakeisle Little Dragon With Tumblers.
PGD (13,2a) 1 Becket's Phinjani The Jazz Singer. Fawn & white trim an honest dog of pleasing size. Good length elegant neck into fair shoulder placement & good front angulation. Stands over the ground but does loose some bend of stifle. Moved well. 2 Hamar's Janelyn Galtec Galaxy. White with brindle not a small one but has elegant neck flows well into well placed shoulder. Good length of ribbing. Just lost topline when standing & could be more postive behind when moving. 3 Copsebury Quantum Leap.
Mid LD (12,1a) 1 Wayman's Beetelain Indian Brave JW. Brindle of pleasing size - Masculine well proportioned with elegance. Cover the ground standing & moving. Strong quarters with muscular definition & stood four square Good depth of body with correct well placed shoulders. Front angulation could have been more pronounced & front movement could be tidier. 2 Morris & Waddell's Crosscop Mr Bojangles. Fawn of well musculed construction. Good bone & overall shape. Needs to be shown over more ground to be seen at his best. Preferred overall balance of winner. 3 Moonlake Must Be Cool.
LD(14,3a) 1 Russell's Willingwisp Star Trooper. Fawn & white trim of excellent size confirmation, balance & movement. The standard could have been written with him in mind. This dogs is exceptionally pleasing to go over. His height, substance, muscle definition, shoulder placement, front & rear angulation, length of ribbing & loin are a total balance for me. He moved around the ring accurately & at a good pace showing good front extension & drive, maintaining his topline. Can be shown with his neck a bit upright (a pet hate-as it spoils the flow of the outline) & stretched over too much ground. In gleaming condition & this was his day. His first CC. I hope he can please others to get made up- I feel he is deserving. RBIS. 2 Smith's Turn Of Gold At Yantabella JW. Brindle & white trim pleasing size & well proportioned with scope elegance. Cover the ground standing & moving. Strong quarters with muscular definition & stood four square. Could be deeper in body, well placed shoulders & front angulation. Not quite the topline or movement of the winner. 3 Head's Demerlay Rythmnblues.
OD (16,5a) 1 Hunter's Ir Ch Mossbawnhill Exclusive CJW08. Five champions showing in the class today headed by this brindle & white trim dog who has substance, muscle definition & stood four square. Long neck with a pleasing flowing into good shoulder placement He can really move around the ring with purpose which is what won him the class here. He was close up in the RCC challenge but I preferred the elegance & scope of the RCC winner. 2 Snelgrove's Ch Huntinghill The Jazz Man JW. I have judged this dog before when he was a puppy & he has now improved beyong expectations. He is now a champion & is deserving of that. He is pleasing to go over. His shoulder & front angulation are good & he moves accurately. If the handler could get him to stand over more ground he would present a better picture. 3 Juneric Midnight Mischief.
